What fits in a day from Hanoi

Hanoi is the base for two of Vietnam's well-known day trips — Ha Long Bay to the east and Ninh Binh to the south — and neither is close. This page sets out the hours, the seasons and the number of nights to leave.

What Hanoi is, from a day-tripper's seat

Hanoi is a capital city that most visitors use for two things: its own streets, and as the starting point for the limestone landscapes outside it. The second use is where people misjudge time. Neither Ha Long Bay nor Ninh Binh is a short hop. The road east to Ha Long takes 2.5 to 3 hours according to port guides; the road south to Trang An about two hours according to agency sources. Every day trip from Hanoi therefore starts between 07:30 and 08:00 and ends after dark or close to it.

That is not a reason to stay in the city. It is a reason to count the hours before choosing.

Trang An is the easier day and the one we suggest for families with young children. Ha Long gives you open water and bigger boats at the cost of five to six hours of road. Ha Long and Ninh Binh do not combine into one day: they lie in different directions from Hanoi.

When to go

The national tourism authority describes March to May and September to November as the pleasant months in this part of the north, with October bringing the rice harvest around Ninh Binh. July and August are hot, with sudden downpours and storms. For Ha Long, the added risk is that the harbour authority stops boats when a storm warning is in force — the day cannot be partly saved.

How many nights to leave

Three nights in Hanoi gives you one day trip and one full day in the city, with the arrival and departure days on either side. Four nights lets you do both day trips without doing them back to back. Two nights and a Ha Long day trip means a 12-hour day sandwiched between two travel days — possible, and tiring.

Getting to Hanoi

Hanoi is served by Noi Bai International Airport to the north of the city, by domestic flights from Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City, and by the north–south railway. Arrival times matter for day trips only in one way: do not plan a day trip for the morning after a late-night arrival. Pickups start at 07:30.

What things cost

Inside a day trip from Hanoi, the published third-party fees are modest next to the vehicle and guide. Agency sources report the Ha Long Bay entrance fee at VND 260,000–310,000 per person depending on the route, and the Trang An boat ticket at VND 300,000 per adult and VND 150,000 per child. Check before you travel; our quotes include them. The pricing page explains what else moves the total.

When to skip a day trip from Hanoi

  • You have two nights or fewer and arrive late — use the day for the city instead.
  • You travel in the storm season with no flexible date and your heart is set on Ha Long.
  • Anyone in your party is badly car-sick: both trips are two hours or more each way.
  • You will see karst landscapes later on your route anyway, and would rather not repeat them.
