What fits in a day from Hoi An and Da Nang

Hoi An and Da Nang are about an hour apart and share the same day trips: My Son about 40 km inland, Hue two hours or more to the north, and the beaches in between. The months from October to January change everything.

What this base really is

Hoi An is an old trading town on the Thu Bon river; Da Nang is a modern city on the coast with the airport and the main cruise port. Most visitors sleep in one and visit the other. For day trips the difference is small: My Son is a little closer to Hoi An, Hue a little closer to Da Nang.

The national tourism authority puts Da Nang airport 50 minutes from Hoi An's Ancient Town and Hue about two hours from Da Nang by car. A guide source puts the Tien Sa cruise port about 30 km and 60 minutes from Hoi An.

My Son and an afternoon in Hoi An is the combination we suggest most. Hue as a day trip is possible but spends four hours or more on the road; if Hue matters to you, a night there is the better plan.

When to go

The tourism authority names March to May as the pleasant months around Hoi An and warns of rainy days and several storms from October to January. Hue's rainy season runs from August to January, and the city often floods from October to late in the year. That makes October to January the months to keep dates flexible.

How many nights to leave

Three nights lets you do My Son one morning, have one free day, and keep one day for Hue or the coast. Two nights is enough for My Son plus the old town. With a Hue day trip, add a night; a Hue day after a My Son morning means two very early starts in a row.

Getting here

Da Nang International Airport takes domestic and regional flights. Trains on the north–south line stop in Da Nang. Cruise ships use Tien Sa in Da Nang or the more remote Chan May; the shore excursions page covers both.

What things cost

The published fee at My Son is VND 150,000 for foreign visitors, including on-site services (management board notice; check before you travel). Our My Son plan includes it. For everything else in a quote, see the pricing page.

When to skip a day trip from here

  • October to January with fixed dates: rain turns My Son paths to mud and Hue often floods.
  • You will stay in Hue later on your route — do not make it a day trip.
  • Your ship docks at Chan May: Hoi An and My Son are a long way for a port day.
  • You want the afternoon on the beach and the morning asleep — My Son works only early.
