What an excursion costs, and why

Every excursion on this site reads "On request". That is not a way to hide the price: the total depends on things we cannot know until you tell us. This page shows what goes into a quote, what moves it most, and the published fees that sit inside it.

Why "On request" and not a number

A private day excursion is a vehicle, a driver, a guide, sometimes a boat, and the entrance fees. The vehicle and guide cost the same whether one person or four travel. So the price per person for a couple can be close to double the price per person for a party of four, on the same day, with the same guide. A single "from" figure would be wrong for most people who read it.

When you send the form we reply by email with one total for your party, the itemised fees inside it, and the date it is valid until. Nothing is charged until you confirm.

What moves the price, in order of effect

  1. Party size. One vehicle and one guide divided by more people. The largest single effect.
  2. Shared or private boat. On Ha Long Bay a private day boat changes the total far more than any other choice.
  3. Hours. A 04:30 Angkor pickup or a 05:00 My Son start costs more driver time than a 09:00 start.
  4. Overnights. The Cu Chi and Mekong excursion includes a hotel and a second guide day.
  5. Season and holidays. Around the Lunar New Year and national holidays, vehicles and boats cost more and sell out.

Distance matters less than people expect, because the vehicle is booked for the day either way.

How a cheaper excursion is made cheaper

If you compare our quote with a lower one, these are the usual differences. None is dishonest in itself; they are just not in our plans.

  • A seat in a large shared bus instead of a private car, collecting from many hotels before leaving town.
  • A guide who meets you at the site rather than travelling with you, so the drive has no commentary.
  • A commission stop. Pak Ou boat tours often stop at a whisky village where operators earn commission; similar stops exist on other routes. They lower the price and take an hour of your day.
  • A nearer substitute. "Mekong" as a stop close to Ho Chi Minh City rather than the market at Can Tho.
  • Fees left out. Entrance and boat tickets paid by you on the day, so the headline looks lower.

What is never in our price

  • International or domestic flights.
  • Visas for Vietnam, Cambodia or Laos.
  • Travel insurance — we do not sell it; buy a policy that covers boat trips.
  • Tips. They are your choice; your guide will not ask.
  • Drinks other than water.

Payment and changes

Payment methods and the booking terms are written into each quote. Weather rules — what happens if Ha Long boats are stopped by a storm warning — are written into each quote too. To compare excursions before you ask for a price, use the excursions table or the planner.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Why is your quote higher than a tour I saw elsewhere?

Usually because ours is private, includes every fee, and has no commission stops. Compare the inclusions line by line; the section on how cheaper excursions are made cheaper lists the common differences.

Is the price per person or per party?

We quote one total for your party and show the per-person figure beside it.

Are entrance fees included?

Yes, for every site written into the plan, except the Angkor Pass, which is personal and bought by you.

Do children pay less?

Some sites charge less or nothing for children, and those savings pass through. The vehicle and guide cost the same, so the total drops less than you might expect.
