My Son Sanctuary, a half day from Hoi An

The Cham temple towers of My Son stand in a closed valley about 40 km from Hoi An. Leave town around five, walk the temple groups in the first cool hours after the 06:00 opening, and be back in Hoi An by late morning with the rest of the day free.

Who this morning is for

My Son is the excursion that fits around a Hoi An stay instead of taking it over. The national tourism authority puts the sanctuary about 40 km from the old town. The management board opens the site at 06:00 every day of the year, public holidays included, and closes at 17:00. Arriving at opening is the whole point: the valley is still cool, the light is low on the brick, and the tour buses from Hoi An and Da Nang have not yet arrived.

UNESCO inscribed My Son in 1999. The towers were built by the Champa kingdom between the 4th and 13th centuries, in a basin ringed by mountains near the source of the Thu Bon river — the same river that reaches the sea at Hoi An. The management board counts more than 70 temple structures across 1,158 hectares. Many are ruins; some were badly damaged in the 20th century. Come for the setting and the brickwork, not for an intact Angkor.

Hour by hour

Day 1

Hoi An – My Son – Hoi An

The first hour after 06:00, before the valley fills

05:00–05:30. Pickup in Hoi An. The road heads inland through rice country; we plan about an hour.

06:00–06:30. At the gate as it opens. The guide buys the tickets while you walk in. From the ticket area you continue into the valley to the temple groups; allow time for that transfer inside the site.

06:30–08:30. The temple groups. Your guide picks the order to keep you ahead of the first coaches and in shade where possible. You see the restored towers, the carved altars, the linga-yoni pedestals and the bomb craters that still mark the valley floor. Paths are gravel and earth, with a few steps.

08:30–09:30. The site museum, a drink in the shade, and — if you want it — the 09:45 Cham dance show. Shows run at 09:45, 10:30, 11:15, 14:00 and 16:00, and can be cancelled on the day.

10:30–11:30. Back in Hoi An, before the hottest part of the day.

The afternoon version

If you cannot face a five o'clock start, the afternoon plan leaves Hoi An at about 13:30, walks the temples from 14:30 and catches the 16:00 show, returning by 18:00. It is hotter and busier for the first hour, and the site closes at 17:00, so there is less slack. We suggest it only on days when the forecast afternoon is mild.

What we cut first if the morning runs late

The museum goes first, then the dance show. The temple groups are the reason for the trip and stay whole. If heavy rain is forecast for the early morning, we move the pickup later rather than walk you through mud at dawn.

Season and weather

The tourism authority names March to May as the pleasant months around Hoi An and warns of rainy days and several storms from October to January. My Son sits inland in a valley: paths turn to mud in heavy rain. The months to be careful with are October to January.

Included and not included

What the price includes

  • Private air-conditioned car with driver from your Hoi An hotel
  • English-speaking guide
  • My Son entrance ticket
  • Drinking water and a cold towel

What it does not include

  • Breakfast (we can arrange a packed breakfast on request)
  • Tips for guide and driver
  • Travel insurance
  • Vietnam visa

Who this excursion is NOT for

  • Travellers who will not get up at 4:30. The afternoon version exists, but it is hotter and busier.
  • Anyone expecting complete, roofed temples. Many towers are ruins or partly restored.
  • Visitors in October to January without flexible dates. Heavy rain turns the valley paths to mud.
  • People who need step-free paths. The ground is uneven gravel and earth with some steps; a wheelchair cannot reach most temple groups.

What to bring and wear

  • Shoulders and knees covered — this is a religious site.
  • Closed shoes with grip for gravel.
  • Insect repellent; the valley is forested.
  • A hat and water; there is little shade between groups.

Booking this morning

Send the form with your Hoi An hotel and the date. Combine it with an afternoon in town or a beach afternoon; both fit. If you are on a cruise ship docking at Tien Sa, the shore excursions page explains why My Son is rarely the right shore day. More Hoi An options are on the Hoi An and Da Nang page, and the booking steps are on the how to book page.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

What time does My Son open?

The management board publishes 06:00 to 17:00, every day including public holidays. We aim to arrive at opening.

How much is the ticket?

The board's published price for foreign visitors is VND 150,000, including on-site services. It is part of our quote; fees can change, so check before you travel.

Is the dance show worth staying for?

It is short and adds context to the carvings you have just seen. With the 06:00 start, the 09:45 show fits without delaying the return much.

Can we go back to Hoi An by boat?

A river return on the Thu Bon can be arranged on request; it adds time and depends on water levels. Ask when you send the form and we will tell you whether it fits your date.
