Shore days from Vietnam's cruise ports

Cruise ships call at working ports, often an hour or more from the city on the brochure. This page lists, port by port, the distance and drive time to each city, what fits in your hours ashore, and the margin we keep before all-aboard.

The rule we plan by

A guide source on the Da Nang port puts it bluntly: keep a 90-minute cushion before all-aboard, because the ship will not wait for independent travellers. We plan every shore day backwards from that point. Your back-at-the-ship time is all-aboard minus 90 minutes; from that we subtract the drive, a traffic margin, and only then fill the middle with sights.

  • If the ship tenders, add the tender queue at both ends — ask the ship for its estimate.
  • If the ship arrives late, the day shrinks from the cut list, not from the margin.
  • If the city is too far for your hours ashore, we tell you before you book.

Tien Sa sits on the Son Tra peninsula as part of the Da Nang port, close to the city. Chan May and Phu My are industrial ports with nothing within walking distance; you need transport from the quay.

Ha Long: take the bay, not Hanoi

Ships at Ha Long dock in the port city. Hanoi is 2.5 to 3 hours away each way — five to six hours of driving on a port day, plus the 90-minute margin, which leaves little of a normal call for Hanoi itself. We suggest the bay itself: a day boat leaves from the same city, and the time goes to the water, not the road. Storm warnings stop the boats; if that happens, the alternative is a short land programme near the port.

Chan May: Hue, if your hours allow

Chan May serves Hue, Da Nang and Hoi An, and is close to none of them. One agency source puts Hue 62 km and about 1 hour 20 minutes away; another port guide gives 100 km, and a third about 2.5 hours. We plan on the longer time. With nine or more hours ashore, the Hue citadel and one royal tomb fit. With less, Da Nang is the safer choice. The road south to Da Nang and Hoi An crosses the Hai Van area; times vary.

Tien Sa: Hoi An, or Da Nang and the Marble Mountains

Tien Sa is the easy port. The guide source gives 15 to 20 minutes to central Da Nang, 15 minutes to the Linh Ung pagoda on the peninsula, 35 minutes to the Marble Mountains and about 60 minutes to Hoi An. It also warns that traffic on the Thuan Phuoc Bridge can add 20 to 30 minutes. A Hoi An half day fits most calls; My Son, at about 40 km beyond Hoi An, rarely does.

Phu My: Ho Chi Minh City needs a long call

Phu My is 80 to 100 km from Ho Chi Minh City; one guide gives about 1.5 hours, and city traffic makes it longer. Some ships anchor and tender. For a call under about nine hours, Vung Tau at about 45 minutes is the realistic alternative. Cu Chi from Phu My is not something we plan on a port day.

Short stopovers by air

The same logic applies to a one-night stopover. In Siem Reap, the Angkor sunrise and small circuit fits into one morning and early afternoon. In Hanoi, a single free day can take Trang An and Hoa Lu. In Ho Chi Minh City, Cu Chi fits a morning. Send your flight times with the form and we plan from them.

What to send us

  • Ship name, port and date.
  • Scheduled arrival and all-aboard times, and whether the ship tenders.
  • Party size and anyone with limited mobility.
  • The one thing you most want to see.

We reply by email with a plan built from those times. The booking steps explain the rest; the pricing page shows what moves the quote.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

How much time should we leave before all-aboard?

We keep 90 minutes, following port guidance that the ship will not wait for independent travellers. With a tender, add the queue.

Can we see Hanoi from Ha Long port?

Only with a long call. The drive is 2.5 to 3 hours each way, so a port day leaves little time in Hanoi itself. We suggest the bay instead.

Is Hue reachable from Chan May?

Yes, with nine or more hours ashore. Sources give between 1 hour 20 minutes and 2.5 hours each way; we plan on the longer time.

What if our ship arrives late?

We shorten the day from the cut list in your plan and keep the margin before all-aboard intact.
